About Mrs. Simons

Hi my name is Kayla Simons. I am so excited to be your child's second grade teacher this year! I grew up in Magnolia and went to MES when I was in elementary! I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in 2011. I have taught 3rd grade for two years and this will be my fifth year in 2nd grade!
My husband and I have two kids, Jaxon will be in kindergarten at MES this year and Addley just turned 1.

I will be teaching Math, Science and Social Studies to your child this year and they will be going to Mrs. Dellwo for Reading, Writing and Phonics. We are so excited to watch your child learn this year. I think that when there is a strong line of communication established between teachers and parents, it encourages your child to do their best for both of us. Please do not hesitate to call or email with any questions or concerns.

Please make sure they come to school with this on. We will also need to use this shirt for various things throughout the year, so please take good care of it!
  • Please make sure your child wears shorts (as of now it will be 80 degrees on Friday) and tennis shoes. We will be doing lots of walking.
  • Please make sure that your child brings a sack lunch from home. It needs to be in a disposable container so we don't have to keep up with lunch kits. They can also get a sack lunch from the cafeteria. Please let me know if you haven't already if your child needs a sack lunch.
  • Parent Volunteers will either follow us from the school to the farm or meet us there. You will need to stay with your child's class until it is time to do the corn maze.
  • Parents cannot take their kids from the field trip, you will need to come back to school and sign them out.

October 2-6

Our first math test last week went great! I am so proud of how well the students performed on it. For those that received a failing grade, we will be reteaching this week during small group and we will retest on Friday.

Here is what is going on this week:

-Math- We will be adding this week. Monday through Wednesday we will focus on fact families and Thursday and Friday we will dive into 2 digit addition. We will be adding 2 digit numbers using a hundreds chart this week. If you would like to work with your child at home, there is a hundreds chart in the daily folder. Please DO NOT teach them how to "stack" the numbers. I know it makes sense to our adult brains, but we are trying to instill a strong number sense into the students before they use the standard algorithm. They will be introduced to this in third grade.

-Science- We will focus on how matter is changed with heat. We will be talking about freezing and melting.

Please continue to check your child's daily folder. It is SO important that we are a team and that you know how your child's day was. Also, if you are wanting your child to do some work at home, their First in Math and iStation log ins are in the plastic sleeves of their folders.

September 25-29

We are off to a great start! We have hit the ground running and I am so proud of what your children have already accomplished in these first 3 weeks! Here is what we will be doing this week:

Math: We will be solving number puzzles using hundreds charts, interpreting data on bar graphs, tally graphs, and picture graphs, taking our first assessment, and then we will begin adding.

Social Studies: We will discuss government leaders and then we will be identifying important symbols in our country.

We go to library on Thursday
Monday we will all be in the gym for a special Tae-Kwon-Do presentation.

We will also be introducing a new behavior management system this week that we are hopeful will encourage all students to be the best they can be every day! There will be a note coming home tomorrow in your child's Daily Folder. Please make sure their Daily Folders come back to school each day.

Have a great week :)

August 28-September 1

Welcome to Second Grade

I am so excited to be your child's teacher this year. Its going to be an exciting full of learning, laughter and fun.  I love being teacher and getting a new class each year is such an awesome experience.

We spend the vast majority of time the first couple of weeks on routines and procedures S-L-O-W-L-Y at the beginning of the year.   We have to set clear expectations and practice them over and over so we have successful learning for the rest of the year.  We will be  emphasizing hard work and trying our best in all that we do.

We will also be working on establishing our classroom family.  We are developing relationships with your children which is very important and takes a great deal of time.  So please be patient with us as far as grades, papers, etc., our focus now is on your children and we want them loving school and us.  It's going to be a fantastic year and we are already think your kids are awesome.  Thanks for trusting us to be your child's teacher, we look forward to a great year.
